3 Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices retained, handing Democrats key victory

Three Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices were projected to be retained in Tuesday’s election, handing Democrats critical statewide wins in the Keystone State.

The wins ensure that Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty and David Wecht
— all Democrats — will serve for another 10 years on the bench. The court currently has a 5-2 Democratic majority.

Only one justice has failed in a retention vote in the state’s history, but Pennsylvania Democrats maintained they were not taking any chances.

Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) rolled out an ad last month backing the three incumbent justices, warning “the threats to our freedoms are very real.” Additionally, the Democratic National Committee invested in the race, with the committee’s Chair Ken Martin traveling to the state to campaign last month.
