Anna Wintour says there was no talk from President Trump about anyone in his family landing a potential Vogue cover while meeting with him at the White House.
The longtime Vogue editor in chief, who now serves as Condé Nast's chief content officer, said she visited the Trump White House twice in recent months to talk tariff policy.
"The president, the vice president and the chief of staff were amazingly open to everything that we were talking about," Wintour — a prominent supporter and fundraiser for Democratic candidates — said in an interview with Variety published Thursday.
"The fashion industry itself is already highly tariffed at 12.5 percent, so anything on top of that would be stacking. We’re seeking clarity, and looking at a reality where small business — the tariffs can amount to as much as their payroll," Wintour, 75, said.
"How can we support the creativity and designers who want to make things in America? With tariffs so high, it’s going to become more and more challenging to do so," she said.
Variety asked if Trump attempted to "barter a Vogue cover for anyone in his family."
"That didn't come up," Wintour replied.
While Wintour said in 2017 that the fashion magazine had a "tradition of always covering whoever is the first lady ... and I can’t imagine that this time would be any different," Melania Trump has never appeared on its cover during President Trump's first or second terms.
The former model did get the Vogue cover treatment in 2005, appearing ahead of her wedding to the then-New York real estate developer.
Asked in 2019 why Melania Trump had never graced the magazine's cover as first lady, Wintour said, “I think it’s important for Vogue to support women who are leading change in this country."
