Chip Roy: Republicans face 'bloodbath' in midterms if they undermine Trump
GOP Rep. Chip Roy (Texas) on Wednesday said Republicans face a “bloodbath” in midterm elections if they don’t get moving on President Trump’s agenda.
“If we sit back on defense and if we side with the moderates and if we undermine President Trump, then it will be a bloodbath in the midterms and that will do nothing to advance the agenda for a free country,” the lawmaker for the Lone Star State said during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast.
Bannon, a Trump ally, has been pushing the GOP to get ahead of midterm elections by focusing on the working class.
“This is a wake-up call that if you don't lead and lead with a clear vision and a clear direction, you're going to get absolutely slaughtered. That's what happened in Virginia…,” Roy said of Democratic Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger’s win.
“Lead with something people can sink their teeth into. People are tired of not being able to afford housing. They're tired of not being able to afford groceries,” he added.
The Texas representative credited Trump for attempting to solve inflation but said it would take time for his economic agenda to bring relief nationwide.
Meanwhile, House Republicans are railing against New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, for slating plans to introduce free busing, free child care and city-run grocery stores.
“Texas is the Mecca of the West. The way to confront New York City is we got to hold Texas,” Bannon told Roy during the Wednesday segment.
Roy agreed and urged his colleagues in the lower chamber to share follow the president’s lead.
“Republicans are sitting around making nice and giving speeches on the steps of the Capitol instead of rip-roaring coming through behind the President to save this country,” he said.
“We've got to start being aggressive, and we've got to do something about it.”
