De Blasio on Cuomo: 'Trump’s endorsement in New York City is a kiss of death'
Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) on Tuesday slammed President Trump’s endorsement of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo as the “kiss of death” for his campaign.
“Trump's endorsement in New York City is a kiss of death. So I think what happened here was the Cuomo team was absolutely desperate,” de Blasio said during an appearance on CNN’s Election Day panel.
“They hoped they could pull Sliwa voters, Republican voters, over, with a Trump endorsement. The problem is New York City voters, a lot of people come out on Election Day, especially in the evening in New York City, and so they had plenty of time to hear that Donald Trump had endorsed Andrew Cuomo,” he added.
The Big Apple's former mayor predicted the message would be poorly received by 75 percent of voters, including Democrats and independents.
“There's a huge miscalculation by Cuomo, but I think it was desperation, because he didn't have anything else,” he told anchor Erin Burnett.
Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani has been leading in the polls and campaigning heavily ahead of Election Day.
Cuomo has been shifting his approach to connecting with voters and recently received an endorsement from current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, after he dropped out of the race.
Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee, has also stood firm in the race, refusing to lose his spot on the ballot despite pressure from GOP lawmakers.
