Education Department prioritizing grants for 'patriotic' instruction

The Education Department announced Wednesday additional supplemental federal grants for what it considers “patriotic education.”

The grants will be available to use on civic education and promoting American history “with an unbiased approach," the Trump administration says.

The news came the same day the launch of the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, a group of conservative organizations that will take charge in nationwide conservations about “liberty, citizenship, and America’s enduring values,” was announced.

The Education Department defines patriotic education as presenting “American history in a way that is accurate, honest, and inspiring.”

It focuses on the ideals the nation was founded on and examples of people in history who upheld those values such as civil rights heroes, according to the federal agency.

“In the American system, educated citizens who know their rights and embrace their responsibilities cooperate to build a more perfect Union,” said Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “It is imperative to promote an education system that teaches future generations honestly about America’s Founding principles, political institutions, and rich history. To truly understand American values, the tireless work it has taken to live up to them, and this country’s exceptional place in world history is the best way to inspire an informed patriotism and love of country."

The proposal for the funding is up for a 30-day public comment period before the rulemaking process can be complete.

The groups involved in the America 250 Civics Education Coalition include Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College and the America First Policy Institute, where McMahon used to work, along with 40 other organizations.

Over the next year, the Education Department said the coalition with reveal initiatives for across the country, such as a speaking tour on college campuses.

The coalition’s aim is “renewing patriotism, strengthening civic knowledge, and advancing a shared understanding of America’s founding principles in schools across the nation.”

The coalition leaves out leading nonprofit groups in this sector, such as the National Constitution Center and the National Council for the Social Studies.
