Nearly half of Americans in a recent survey said Israel has “gone too far” in its war with Hamas in Gaza.
The Associated Press-NORC Research Center poll, released this week, found that 49 percent of U.S. adults believe Israel has "gone too far" in the Gaza Strip. Another 33 percent said the military response has been "about right" and 12 percent said it had "not gone far enough."
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Wednesday blasted Israel's continued military operation in Gaza, accusing the Israeli military of committing “genocide” against Palestinians in the region. Sanders, an outspoken critic of Israel, said that while the nation had a right to defend itself following Hamas's attack on Oct. 7, 2023, the conflict has gone too far.
“But, over the last two years, Israel has not simply defended itself against Hamas. Instead, it has waged an all-out war against the entire Palestinian people," the Vermont senator said in an op-ed Wednesday. "Many legal experts have now concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza."
About 22 percent in the recent survey also said the U.S. providing the Israeli military with aid during the war is "extremely important" or "very important" for the Trump administration's foreign policy goals. Another 41 percent said it is "not too important" or "not important at all."
The survey comes as Israel has moved forward with its plans to take over Gaza City. Israel's Defense Forces (IDF) ordered thousands of Palestinians to relocate to a humanitarian area ahead of the ground offensive.
A famine has also been declared in parts of the region, with more than half a million facing "starvation, destruction and death,” according to a warning released last month by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
The AP-NORC survey was conducted from Sep. 11-15 with 1,183 respondents and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
