Live updates: Mamdani delivers fiery victory speech; California OKs redistricting measure

California voters approved a ballot measure, Proposition 50, that would allow redrawing of congressional maps to add as many as five Democratic seats, countering Republican efforts in other states. 

On the other side of the nation, New York City elected democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as its next mayor on Tuesday, sending a message to Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, that Mamdani's message of affordability resonated loudly.

In the day's big governor's races, Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill will now lead Virginia and New Jersey, according to Decision Desk HQ. Spanberger will be the commonwealth's first female leader.

In Virginia’s attorney general race, Del. Jay Jones (D) overcame a scandal involving leaked violent text messages to beat incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares (R).

New York City’s mayoral race drew massive turnout, with elections officials saying it is at a 30-year high with three hours of voting remaining.
