Watch live: House Democrats speak as government shutdown persists

House Democrats will speak with reporters Thursday morning as the record government shutdown stretches into its 37th day — with no clear end in sight.

Democrats have gained some ground in recent days following major wins in Tuesday's elections, with some signaling the sweep could boost the party's chances in next year's midterms. Senate Democrats have blocked the GOP-led continuing resolution to open the government in 14 different votes, and the latest campaign victories stand to give them more footing in the fight.

The press conference, led by House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), comes after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) gave remarks during a hearing on rising health insurance premiums and a lapse in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as the shutdown persists.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. EST.
